In 1960, President de Gaulle paid an official visit to Britain and addressed the House of Commons. That speech was preceded by words of welcome addressed to de Gaulle by the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker of the Chamber of Commons. In the video segment below, readers who listen to the Speaker’s address will note that de Gaulle’s interpreter repeatedly skipped words and shortened sentences.
