The recently-published report by the USA Census Bureau, entitled Language Use in the United States: 2007, shows that there were 280,564,877 residents of the United States above the age of 5. Of these, more than fifty-five million (almost one in five) spoke a language other than English at home. Spanish and Spanish Creole accounted for over thirty-four million (12% of the total population) while French, including Patois and Cajun, was spoken by 1,358,816 persons (less than half a percent of the total population).
